PAWS in the D hosted two more informative workshops over the past month for representatives of animal groups working in the City of Detroit. Dr. Shirene Cece-Clements, Director of Shelter Medicine at the Michigan Humane Society, gave a thought-provoking presentation on contagious diseases of dogs and cats in the field. The presentation outlined typical diseases and how rescuers can avoid becoming infected or spreading them. Dr. Cece also discussed typical treatment options and vaccinations for specific diseases. In early May, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Animal Industry Division’s Animal Shelter Regulatory Program Manager, Polly McKillop, gave a wide-ranging presentation on stray animals and the laws surrounding feeding, trapping and rehoming them.

The next PAWS in the D workshop will be held on May 27th on the topic of “Laws and Liabilities of Rescuing Animals” by Wayne County Prosecuting Attorney Raj Prasad and Ann M. Griffin, Esq. of the Michigan Humane Society and the Michigan State Bar’s Animal Law Section. RSVP to Jaime Martin at JMartin@michiganpaw.org.
